“Painting is self-discovery. Every good artist paints what he is.”
— Jackson Pollock
ART4Healing©
ART4Healing© workshops:
-
provide opportunities for participants to explore and express feelings with a new and unique visual vocabulary.
-
introduce a particular language of art that communicates through the abstracted application of acrylic paint on canvas.
-
allow participants opportunities to use art expression as inspiration for resolution, closure and healing.
Workshops typically last 1½ to 2½ hours, depending upon the number of participants, which can vary from 6-15 people per session.
Each participant creates 3-4 abstract paintings with acrylic paints on canvas following “prompts” from the facilitator that are intended to initiate spontaneous responses.
Following each painting exercise is a period of critiquing, which may be an opportunity for sharing, if the participant desires to do so.
Each participant leaves with all of their paintings. What is voluntarily shared during these sessions is understood to be confidential.

ART4Healing© vs Art Therapy
ART4Healing© shares art as a tool for self-expression and self-exploration. The format, structure and frequency of the sessions make it clear that the leaders are facilitators of the creative process, not therapists guiding it. ART4Healing© facilitators do not offer any interpretation or diagnosis. The focus remains on the participants to be in charge of their own exploration. The fact that this process is therapeutic does not make it art therapy. Art therapy is actually a legally separate field of practice.
Joyce Firth has International ART4Healing© Facilitator Certification. She also holds a Master’s Degree in Art Education.
The ART4Healing© Story
ART4Healing© workshops were developed as a supportive facilitation modality to help adults, children and teens deal with a variety of emotional situations through a guided process involving abstract painting. These workshops have been tremendously successful and claim to have helped thousands of individuals with a variety of traumas, as well as those simply wishing to share in the journey of self-expression and self-exploration. It is believed that participation in this modality of self-expression creates an opportunity to visually chronicle emotions and feelings, thus providing an environment for healing to occur.
